Why Winter Weather Makes Tyre Safety More Important Than Ever
As the colder, wetter months settle in, road conditions begin to change rapidly. Rain, ice, fallen leaves, and darker evenings all contribute to reduced grip and longer stopping distances. That’s why tyre condition is one of the most important safety factors for any driver during bad weather.
Recently, we had a customer come in for their routine MOT with no idea that their tyres were in extremely poor condition. The photo below shows just how worn they had become. Not only were these tyres well below the legal tread limit, but they posed a serious safety hazard. In conditions like the ones we’re seeing now, tyres in this state can dramatically increase the risk of skidding, aquaplaning, or completely losing control of the vehicle.
Why Worn Tyres Are So Dangerous
Tyres are the only point of contact between your car and the road—about the size of your hand per tyre. When the tread becomes worn:
- Grip decreases significantly, especially in rain and cold temperatures.
- Stopping distances increase, which can be life-threatening in an emergency.
- The chance of punctures or blowouts rises, putting you and others at risk.
- Driving becomes illegal, as UK law requires a minimum tread depth of 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre.
In the winter months, experts actually recommend at least 3mm of tread to ensure proper performance and safety.
Don’t Leave It to Chance
Many drivers don’t realise their tyres are worn until it’s too late. Tyres degrade gradually, and because you use your car every day, the change can be easy to miss. That’s why regular checks—especially ahead of bad weather—are essential.
